Regular Modified Demolition Derby Rules
The following rules and/or regulations set forth herein are designed to provide for the orderly conduct of the Western Illinois Fair Demolition
Derby's and to establish minimum acceptable requirements for such events. These regulations shall govern the condition of all events, and by participating in these events, all participants
are deemed to have complied with these rules. No express or implied warranty of safety shall result from publication of or compliance with these rules and/or regulations. They are intended as a guide for the conduct of the sport and are in no way a guarantee against injury or death to
any participant, spectator, or official.
The Western Illinois Fair Demo Derby Officials shall be empowered to permit minor deviation from any of the specifications herein or impose any further restrictions that in their opinion do not lower the safety factor. Any interpretation or deviation of these rules is left to the discretion of the officials, and their decision is
final. The Western Illinois Fair reserves the right to approve and/or reject all entries.
The Western Illinois Fair, event sponsors, and their agents of any sort are not responsible for accidents.
Contestants are herewith advised that Pike County Style demolition
derbies are destructive derbies run to the last car in motion.
We DO NOT have nor enforce rules prohibiting deliberate, destructive
contact excepting those required for participant and spectator
safety.
There will be $500 protest fee due from any contestant who wishes to protest another entrant's vehicle.
Protest must be
made no later than 5-minutes after the heat in question.
Only drivers may protest.
IF a problem is found the fee is refundable.
IF nothing is found, half will go to the car protested, and half will go to
The Western Illinois Fair.
These are the rules and they will be enforced!
Let's have fun; if your don't want to, stay at home.
Knock out the windows, beef it up and derby!
The intent of these rules is to allow for a safe demolition derby event and to limit the modifications that may be made to entrant's vehicles.
These rules dated
02/23/2010
supersede all other rules in existence.
Please note changes to the
2010 Modified Derby Rules. Please read them carefully. If car does
not pass inspection or the driver is unwilling to change the car to
pass inspection, the car will not run.
Special changes to these rules
exist for other classes of vehicles. Please review that information for
other classes.

POLICIES:
1.
THE WESTERN
ILLINOIS FAIR HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE ANY ENTRY OR SPECTATOR ADMITTANCE,
AND RESERVES THE RIGHT TO DISQUALIFY A CAR OR DRIVER AT ANY TIME FOR ANY
REASON THE OFFICIALS DEEM NECESSARY.
2.
ENTRIES
AND QUALIFICATIONS
a.
Each derby
class shall consist of heat races, a consolation race and a feature.
b.
All persons
must sign an entry form, insurance waiver, release form, pay entry fees,
and purchase a pit pass before entering the pit area.
c.
All drivers
and riders must be 18 years or older, and must be able to provide proof
of age at the request of officials. Persons 16 and 17 years old must
have a parent or guardian sign a minor waiver and release form. NO
EXCEPTIONS.
d.
An entry fee
of $20 will be charged for each car entered (1 car, 1 driver and 1
pitman) There will be a $30 fee for a passenger.
e.
THERE IS
ABSOLUTELY NO ALCOHOL IN THE PITS. This also includes pit crews. If you
or ANY of your crew is caught with alcohol in the pits, you and your car
will be disqualified.
f.
All cars
should be signed in one hour before derby time and inspected at least
1/2 hour before derby time. Any car determined to be unsafe or built
contrary to these rules will not be allowed to run unless changed to the
judges' satisfaction.
g.
Anything done
to car to make it illegal after inspection will be cause for immediate
disqualification.
h.
Cars are
subject to re-inspection before any prize money is handed out. Cars
found to be illegal will be stripped of anything that they may have won.
i.
A mandatory
drivers meeting will be held before the start of the show. Failure to
attend will result in disqualification.
j.
All drivers
must pick up trophies and earnings 15 minutes after the completion of the event, or
forfeit their winnings. They will not be available after that time.
k.
All derby
participants, pit crew, spectators and all others will be expected to
behave in a sportsman like manner. There will be a zero tolerance
for argument or violence in any form. Persons determined by any event
staff member or law enforcement personnel to be disruptive in any way
will be immediately ejected without refund from the property along
with their entire party, and will further be subject to arrest and
prosecution
3.
GENERAL CAR
RULES.
a.
NO PAINTING,
UNDERCOATING, OILING OR GREASING OF FRAMES. IF YOU DO YOU WILL NOT BE
INSPECTED AND YOU WILL NOT RUN.
b.
NO
reinforcements allowed other than as specified below. Any metal added to
reinforce the body is illegal.
c.
Four-wheel
drive models will only be allowed to run one drive shaft.
d.
CONCRETE is
not allowed in the pit area. Don’t hide it in the car, and don’t bring
it with you.
This is an
instant disqualification for the rest of that day's events!
e. We reserve the right to put any car in
any class based on our inspection.
4.
SAFETY AND
DERBY DRIVING
a.
All drivers
and riders must wear approved helmets, long pants, shirts and eye
protection during competitions.
b.
NO Hot-Roding
in the pits! This is an instant disqualification for the rest
of that day's events!
Keep it at an idle.
c.
After the
start of any event you have 1 minute to start moving, and then 1 minute
to make a hit.
d.
NO
sandbagging! The fans pay to see a show, so put one on for them! If
officials determine you are sandbagging, you will be disqualified.
e.
NO
INTENTIONAL HITTING THE DRIVER’S DOOR, but don't use the driver door as
a shield. If your hitting a driver's door is deemed by officials to be careless or
intentional, you will be disqualified. If you intentionally use your driver's door as a
defense, we will not penalize the other driver. If you use the driver's door defense
repeatedly you will be disqualified.
f.
Your first
fire will be put out, and a second fire will cause disqualification. You
may make pit repairs and come back in the consolation.
If in a feature, you will be disqualified.
g.
Drivers may
switch cars for the feature, providing that the car changed to has run in a
prior heat. Officials must be notified and approve of any car changes before the
feature.
h. Be ready to run! When a heat,
consolation or feature is announced over the PA system, you have
3 MINUTES to enter the arena. We will not hold up an
event because you are taking your time. Keep an eye on what's going on.
If you know you cannot run, or will have a problem getting ready in the
time allowed, please contact the derby officials before the
heat/consolation/feature is called. We may accommodate
legitimate and reasonable delays if we know in advance.
Note: If
there is any question or doubt, please refer to Rule #1, above.
AUTOMOBILE BODY/FRAME REGULATION for all passenger cars
and station wagons:
(FORD product
80 and newer, GM product 79 and newer, DODGE/CHRYSLER product 79 and
newer)
No trucks,
jeeps, hearses, or limousines except in announced special classes.
BODY:
1.
GENERAL
RULES:
a.
All glass
must be removed before reaching the track.
b.
All cars must
be swept clean, both drivers compartment and trunk. (No spare tires,
broken glass, or trash, etc., will be allowed in cars).
c.
Cars must
have secure seatbelts and working brakes.
d.
Battery must
be securely fastened and covered inside the passenger compartment.
e.
Radiator must
be mounted in stock location.
f. Trailer
hitches: Class A or frame mounted hitches must be totally removed. Class
B or bumper-mounted hitches must have the trailer ball and stub cut off.
2.
DOORS:
a.
All doors
must
be welded, chained or wired shut.
b.
If welded, no
straps larger than 4‘’x1/8‘’.
3.
FENDERS:
Fenders can be bolted together with 3/8’’ or smaller bolts, with a
maximum of 10 per fender.
4.
HOOD:
a.
Hoods must
have at least 2 holes, at least 4'' in diameter on each side of
carburetor for fire extinguisher access. Clear fire extinguisher access
is mandatory!
b.
If the hood
is removed, the fan blade must be removed or the fan belt cut.
c.
In the front
of car you may have 2 pieces of 3/4'' all-thread, with a washer no
larger than 6''. All-thread must be mounted outboard or behind the
radiator and can go through the frame.
d.
You may use
angle iron back to back on the topside with bolts through it. Angle iron
cannot be longer than 6''. (2) on each side of car.
e.
Maximum
of 6 places holding the hood down and any amount of wire. A maximum of
20 3/8'' or smaller bolts are allowed to bolt hood seams together .
5.
TRUNK AND
TAILGATES:
a.
On the rear
of car, two pieces of 3/4’’ all-thread, with a washer no larger than
6’’. All-threads may be mounted anywhere on deck lid. In addition to
all-thread, you may weld 5'' leave 5'' OR use 20 3/8'' or smaller bolts and
any amount of wire.
b.
On station
wagons 2 pieces of 3/4’’ all-thread, with a washer no larger than 6’’.
All-threads may be used in the rear through roof and stock body mount
replacing existing bolt and any amount of wire. Tailgate may be welded
5” leave 5” OR use 20 3/8" or smaller bolts and any amount of wire.
6.
BODY BOLTS:
a.
All body
mount bolts may be replaced with 3/4'' bolts.
b.
You can take
body bushings out.
c.
If you chose
to go all the way through the frame, these nuts
must be off for inspection purposes (Z-box, and in front of and behind rear tires).
CAGE AND ROOF:
1.
THERE ARE NO
EXCEPTIONS. YOU MUST HAVE A CAGE.
a.
You must have
2 (but no more than 3) cross bars; one across dash, one behind front
seats, and one in rear seat area. You can run 4 vertical down tubes, (2
per side). All down tubes must be behind the dash bar, straight up and
down. Down tubes may be welded to the frame but cannot go to a crush
box. No kickers are allowed.
b.
Maximum width
of a side bar is 12'' and it must be at least 12'' off of the floor and
must stop before the inside rear wheel well
c.
You CANNOT
have any part of the cage on the outside of the car (grader blade, pipe, C-channel, etc).
d.
You can have
one halo bar that can be attached to the cage bar and run to the frame but
it will be counted as 2 of your down tubes.
2.
A minimum of
1 bar, chain, or wire running from the outside (top) of roof down to the
dash in the front window is MANDATORY for safety.
3.
A maximum of
two rear window bars/wire/chain is allowed, but they cannot extend 12''
past the bottom of the rear window and cannot be connect to a halo bar.
FRAME:
1.
IF YOUR FRAME
IS PAINTED, UNDERCOATED, OR ANYTHING BUT FACTORY DON’T BRING IT. WE'RE
NOT WASTING OUR TIME LOOKING!!! YOU WILL NOT RUN.
2.
NO
BAND-AIDS. NO CONCRETE. DO NOT WELD FACTORY HOLES UP; All factory holes
must remain open for inspection of the frame.
3.
No plating,
stuffing, heat treating or foam filling of frames is allowed.
4.
ONLY top
frame seams front of A-ARMS forward can be re-welded (up to 1/2" wide) and
no extra metal can be added.
5.
You may pitch
frame in front. YOU CAN ONLY RE-WELD THE WELDS THAT YOU HAVE TO CUT TO
PITCH THE FRONT.
6.
DO NOT
RE-WELD ALL OF THE WELDS ON THE BOXES. NO ADDED METAL. NO EXTRA BRACING
OR GUSSETS.
7.
Chrysler cars
may take K-member bushings out and run all-thread through frame. Do not
weld it.
8.
You may run 1
wire or chain from frame rail to frame rail behind the rear axle.
BUMPERS:
1.
Any car
bumper may be bolted or welded to any car. If you don’t use the stock
canister you can use square or round pipe up to 2''x1/4'' but they cannot go
past OEM mounting bolt location on frame
2.
You may use
two (2) pieces of light chain per shock.
3.
Fenders and
bumper ends may be trimmed to allow for wheel clearance.
4.
You can load
any car bumper BUT IT MUST LOOK STOCK. Bumpers must have inspection
holes to see inside bumper. NO CONCRETE!!!
SUSPENSION:
1.
Stiffness of
suspension will be left up to the discretion of the driver. NO ADDED
METAL.
2.
Homemade tie
rods and a homemade steering shaft are permitted.
3.
Converting
coil springs to leaf springs is allowed but you must follow these rules:
a.
Springs must
have at least a 2 inch stager, no more then 5 clamps per side, no more
than 7 springs per side.
b.
Springs must
be no more than 2 1/2 inches wide, and the longest spring must be no longer than
5 feet.
c.
Back of
spring must have a shackle. Stay as close to factory as possible when
doing this conversion.
d.
Do not
reinforce frame for this conversion.
e.
NO FLAT
LEAFING CAR. MUST BE AN OEM SPRING.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION:
1.
Any engine or
transmission may be used in any car, but must be mounted within 5 inches of
the stock location and cannot be installed to strengthen the car.
2.
Any type of
header is allowed, but it must point up and away from driver and other cars.
3.
Transmission
oil coolers and engine oil coolers are permitted. All transmission
lines must be wrapped or run through PVC.
4.
Distributor
protectors are allowed. They must be attached to engine or transmission
mounting bolts and cannot contact the cage at any time.
5.
Only
gasoline and diesel fuels are allowed. No alcohol or other alternative
fuels are allowed.
6.
Radiator
overflow must be directed to the ground.
GAS TANKS :
1.
Stock tank
must be removed. NO PLASTIC BOAT TANKS, ONLY METAL. The only exception
is a purchased and un-modified racing fuel cell.
2.
Tank must be
mounted in rear seat area and secured with metal straps or ratchet
straps (no bungee cords, plumbers strap, or metal screws).
3.
All tanks
must be covered with a rubber cover, or something non-flammable.
4.
All tanks
must have a secure cap.
5.
All tanks,
lines and fittings must be leak-proof and their type and installation
must meet the approval of the officials.
REAR END/TIRES:
1.
Any
automobile rear end may be used.
2.
Only 16'' or
smaller tires and wheels will be allowed.
3.
NO split rims
allowed.
4.
Valve stem
protectors are permitted.
5.
Screws are
permitted.
6.
NO liquid in
tires.
PRE-RUN CARS;
You can plate a pre-run car but must follow these rules:
1.
You can only
plate where the car was bent and bends must be visible.
2.
You can only
use up to 40'' of plate 4'' wide 1/4'' thick. THIS IS THE MAX. DON’T GO
OVER.
3.
You cannot
box frame in, plates must be on opposite sides of frame rail. If you
don’t understand call first.
SPECIAL MINI CAR RULES:
Judges will rule on the classification of any vehicle competing on
an individual basis and their decision is final.
Same rules as
full size derby except as follows:
1.
Must be
powered by a four or six cylinder engine.
2.
Wheelbase
must be 108 inches or less. NO EXCEPTIONS!
3.
NO LEAFING
MINI CARS.
4.
NO four-wheel
drive vehicles.
5.
Original
fuel tanks CAN BE USED but must be secured from movement.
6.
All lines
under car must be steel. If running rubber lines they must be inside of
the car.
